Open Water Rowing in a Stunning Location

Hello spring! Embrace the change of season with a row in a traditional-style wooden dory in beautiful Belfast Bay! Learn a new skill in a gorgeous coastal setting. All experience and skill-levels welcome for this one of a kind, classically Maine experience. Prefer to be a passenger only? That's fine--choose "Guided Tour" on the booking form. For your lesson, we'll row out into the bay and/or up the Passagassawakeag River. You'll be introduced to form and technique rowing a two-oared, fixed seat boat in open water. You'll learn about tidal cycles, rowing in a variety of conditions and the fundamentals of navigation. In the spring, rows are often punctuated with sightings of seals, jumping fish, ospreys, loons, eagles, herons, cormorants, ducks and other seabirds. You'll learn about the history of Belfast's working waterfront and our heritage of traditional wooden boats. Row a Wooden Boat: Spring is available for 1-3 people, ages 12 and up. Sessions are offered Tues-Saturday in the mornings and late afternoon. Pricing is $90 per person. If you'd prefer not to row, please choose "Guided Tour" on the booking form. Looking for more comprehensive instruction? Check out DWR's rowing packages under "Book your Row." Your row begins with a safety talk, reviewing the different parts of the boat, going over rowing commands and getting seated properly and comfortably. Lifejackets (PFDs) are required to be worn on the boat and docks in the spring. DWR will provide these--however, if you have your own PFD, please bring it. Dress appropriately for the weather (translation: layers!). Temps vary this time of year and the wind can be brisk. Wear comfortable synthetic, silk or wool clothing clothing, wind resistant outerwear and footwear appropriate for the conditions. Bring water to stay hydrated. Sunscreen is advised for daytime rows. WEATHER AND DWR CANCELLATION POLICY: Safety is DWR's top priority. Rows are weather dependent. DWR will go out in a variety of weather conditions, including light to moderate wind, some chop or swell, fog, rain and snow. DWR's client cancellation policy applies--please review. Look forward to rowing with you!
