Row a Wooden Boat: Summer
Our signature service, summer edition! Open to ALL skill-levels, ages 8 and up!
Service Description
Row a traditional-style wooden dory in beautiful Belfast Bay! Summer is prime time for an on-the-water adventure in Maine. Slow down, tune in, get on the oars and in your body. Immerse yourself in this gorgeous marine environment while trying something new. Soak up radiant sunny days, observe the abundant wildlife that live here, marvel at the interplay of light, sea and sky on the horizon, row through fog and mist. A totally one-of-a-kind experience that is classically Maine! All skill-levels welcome, ages 8 and up. This experience offers an introduction to rowing a fixed seat boat with two oars in open water. We'll row out into bay and/or up the Passagassawakeag River. You'll be guided in basic rowing form and technique, learn about tidal cycles and rowing in a variety of conditions. In the summer, rows are often punctuated with sightings of seals, jumping fish, osprey, eagles, cormorants, loons, gulls and a variety of ducks. Occasionally, we'll see a porpoise or otter! You'll also learn about Belfast's working waterfront and our heritage of wooden boats. This experience is available for 1-3 people, ages 8 and up. Sessions are offered mornings Tues-Sunday. Pricing is $100 per person. Dogs welcome, too! Looking for more comprehensive instruction--check out our row bundles! Your row begins with a safety talk, reviewing the different parts of the boat, going over rowing commands and getting seated properly and comfortably. Lifejackets (PFDs) are required to be worn on the docks and the boat. DWR will provide these--however, if you have your own PFD, please bring it (and let us know). Dress appropriately for the weather. Temps are generally cold this time of year and the wind can be brisk. Layers are recommended. Wear comfortable synthetic, silk or wool clothing clothing, wind resistant/insulated outerwear, a hat and gloves and footwear that will keep you warm and dry. Bring water to stay hydrated. Sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended. WEATHER AND DWR CANCELLATION POLICY: Safety is DWR's top priority. Rows are weather dependent. DWR will go out in a variety of weather conditions, including light to moderate wind, some chop and swells, snow, ice, fog and light rain. DWR's client cancellation policy applies--please review on our FAQs page.
