SALTY WITCH SAUNA TO OPERATE AT THE BELFAST BOATHOUSE!
A BIG win!
For the past few months, I've been working hard to re-establish Salty Witch Sauna on the Belfast waterfront. Salty Witch was recently named the #1 sauna in Maine in Down East magazine's Best of Maine 2026 issue. On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Belfast City Council voted unaminously to approve my proposal to operate Salty Witch at the Belfast Boathouse! This is such a satisfying conclusion to a lot of legwork these past few months. I'm really excited to work with the City of Belfast on this endeavor. You can watch the City Council meeting from the 6th HERE. My remarks to the council are at 11 minutes and 50 seconds. Parks & Recreation Director Adrien Lumumba's presentation, the council's discussion and vote is at 1 hour, 42 minutes.

I am so bowled over by the support of the Belfast City Council for my proposal and all the support that came in in the form of letters, encouragement and a lot of hand holding. I'm also very appreciative of the friends that came to the meeting to speak on behalf of this proposal. I couldn't have done this without all this support! THANK YOU SO MUCH! FEELING SO GRATEFUL!
Salty Witch's new home:
I'm so thrilled with my sauna's new home! The Belfast Boathouse offers incredible views of the harbor and bay, easy and safe access to a beautiful beach for cold plunging and is in close proximity to downtown. There's also ample public parking.
What's next? When can you sauna?
I'm planning on setting up Melusine at her new home next week, hopefully on or close to Oct. 15th. I think this calls for a party to celebrate! I'm planning on an open house/open sauna for the community! Once these plans are firmed up, I'll open the booking calendar. In my remarks to the City Council, I closed with this statement, "To be honest, preparing for tonight, I felt a little bit like Kevin Bacon in the movie Footloose when he stands before the town council. I’m not fighting for the right to dance and I’m not going to quote the Bible. But I can’t help but think of that phrase from The Byrds song: 'To everything (turn turn turn)... there is a season (turn turn turn)... and a time to every purpose under heaven.' And a Maine winter is, without a doubt, the perfect season to sauna."

What to expect
Salty Witch Sauna is a mobile wood-fired sauna on the water in Belfast.
The sauna has a changing room to disrobe and store your clothing and personal items. Bathing suits or swimwear must be worn in the sauna--nudity is not allowed.
Community sauna sessions are small groups, ranging between 2-6 people. Connect with others or share the space quietly.
Private sauna sessions are for up to six people and scheduled by appointment.
Average sauna temps range between 150-180 degrees.
When the sauna is at optimal temperature, water can be poured on the rocks on top of the wood stove to create steam. This is called "löyly."
Sauna is an amazing opportunity to listen to your body. Heat up and then cool off by stepping outside the sauna or venture down to the water for a dip.
What to bring
A bathing suit. We recommend you wear this under your clothes.
A towel to sit on, on the benches
Plenty of water to stay hydrated
Water shoes if you plan for activity outside. A robe or wrap to stay cozy in between cool-downs and heat-ups.
Sauna Rules & Safety Requirements

Bathing suits or athletic wear must be worn at all times. Nudity is not permitted.

Enter and exit the sauna carefully to avoid slipping, falling or touching the woodstove.

Footwear is not allowed in the sauna chamber. Please leave your shoes/boots in the changing room or on the porch. Socks and indoor slippers are ok!

Please bring your own towel and use it to sit on the bench.

Do not touch the woodstove, sauna rocks or stove pipe.

Maintain respectful behavior inside and outside the sauna.

Bring your own water and stay hydrated before and after sauna use. No glass containers inside the sauna chamber.

Please silence your phone and leave it in the changing room. If you need to make/take a call, please do so outside of the sauna.

Items not allowed in the sauna: food, alcohol, glass containers, candles, lotions, oils and other unguents. Smoking and vaping not allowed in or around the sauna.

Please remove metal jewelry, glasses and contacts before entering the sauna.

Respect session time limits, including being on time for the start of your session and exiting the sauna when your session is over. You will receive a 10 minute notice when you are approaching the end of your session.

If at any time you feel unwell, overheated, dizzy or uncomfortable, please exit the sauna immediately.

It is strongly advised to not consume alcohol before your sauna session.

All instructions provided verbally or in writing by Salty Witch Sauna must be followed.

The operators reserve the right to refuse entry, cut short or cancel sessions for any reason that may be deemed a health and safety risk, if there are concerns about risky behavior, or if any of the above rules are not followed. Refunds will not be offered to anyone refused admission.
