It's amazing that's its already October! Fall is my FAVORITE time of year and such a beautiful time to be out on the water. In addition to the changing foliage, the slant of light starts to really vary with the sun rising lower on the horizon, as we head into the colder months. This makes for some stunning photo opportunities! I've included a few images from some recent rows that capture the utter gorgeousness of the autumn season in beautiful Belfast Bay.
It's been a busy time at DoryWoman Rowing! Over the past five weeks or so, I've had the pleasure of taking out all kinds of folks out on the water for a row in my dory Sorciere. This includes visitors to Belfast, as well as residents of the area. I feel like I have the best job in the world! The local press coverage has yielded quite a bit of attention, something which I'm so grateful for. In case you missed it, here's a link to the article by Pete Warner in the Bangor Daily News and also a fun video piece produced by Owen Kingsley of WABI TV that aired last week. I'm getting a kick out of being referred to as "The Dory Woman."
A few of the people I've rowed with have been quite experienced and this has inspired me to add a new row to my daily offerings, the "Hale & Hardy Workout Row." This is for rowers with solid on the water experience and skills navigating mixed conditions. Folks that have completed the Learn to Row a Wooden Boat 4-Pack may be good candidates for this row. It's a shorter, more intense session; an hour and fifteen minutes where we'll focus on a steady pace that gets the heart rate up, building strength, as well as emphasizing excellent form. Depending on interest, this is a row that could continue into the colder months!
I'm also offering "Fall Moon and Stars Rows" in October, and perhaps even later into the fall. These are very special rows that offer folks the unique opportunity to gaze upon the full moon or row under a canopy of stars at the new moon. Available for individuals and small mixed or private groups of up to three. Of course, these rows are both weather and visibility dependent!
Here are some images from the September Moon and Stars row, rowing under the light of the setting sun and rising full Harvest Moon. The photos of me are by my friend Katie Walenter, who is a healing practitioner and photographer, based in Belfast. The short video clip I captured from the boat of the moon on the water. Simply magical.
A few other exciting things happening at DoryWoman Rowing in October! I'll be launching an online store, where I'll offer gift cards for the holidays, to purchase for that special person in your life that would like to try rowing in a traditional-style wooden boat! I also will be offering photo art cards that capture stunning views from the water, throughout the seasons. See some examples below. Right now, these can be purchased at the beautiful new store Trove, in Searsport, owned and operated by Laura Brown, who is also a rower!
And at the end of this month, I'll continue the tradition of the annual Witches Row, happening on Halloween night, also marking the pagan holiday Samhain. This is a fun theme-based row where folks that join me will be encouraged to don witchy garb and bring tricks and treats to share. We'll row around Belfast Harbor, conjuring up some magic...likely inducing a few double-takes and laughs along the way! Look for this row to be added to the calendar soon.
So much vibrancy during this season! I hope your start of fall is filled with color and joy.
